The Bennies Cover TISM

The Bennies popped into triple j to perform a TISM cover of ’(He’ll Never Be An) Ol’ Man River’. With a reggae dub break that included some 'Greg! The Stop Sign!!'.

In a homage to TISM, The Bennies donned balaclavas made from hastily modified Smith Street Band beanies. We could not help but chuckle when the Michael Jackson lyric got replaced with Justin Bieber.

TISM have certainly come back into the public consciousness recently, with almost 15,000 fans signing a petition for the band to reform and represent Australia at Eurovision this year. Although on the SBS online poll, TISM only polled 1 percent.

The whole petition was ill-fated as The Dwarf have it on good authority that TISM will never reform. They were offered a large amount of money to get back together for Meredith Music Festival years ago, which they knocked back. The band has sold off of their assets. The band's lead guitarist James Paull AKA Token Blackman (first billed as Tony Coitus) passed away from lung cancer in 2008. Ron Hitler-Barassi wanted to leave the band almost a decade before the band finally official broke up in 2004. It's over. Get over it. So let us all put these stories of a This Is Serious Mum reformation out of your heads.

Although, they do have an annual TISM meeting where former band members do meet up but TISM fans are not invited. Impromptu performances like this do happen, as you can see from this leaked video from 2011.

The real TISM member, Damian Cowell aka Humphrey B. Flaubert of TISM, did have an encore at his recent Damian Cowell's Disco Machine concert at the Corner Hotel on the 20th of February. During this disco medley, he did included a little segue of TISM's 'I'm Interested In Apathy'. It was thirty seconds of true bliss, seeing him sing that classic TISM song.

Jump to the one minute, 30 second mark for some 'Apathy'.

It is the first time to my knowledge that Damian has performed any songs of his former beloved band. I have attended almost every Melbourne concerts of Damian's pervious bands, ROOT! and The DC3.

Other former TISM band members have also performed covers. Sean Kelly (not to be confused with the Sean Kelly of the other Melbourne band, Models), spent a lot of time during the 1980's with a guitar in his hand and a balaclava on his head. He was known as Leak Van Vlalen of TISM. He has played some comedy shows around Melbourne with comedian, Kieran Butler using the name, RealiTISM.

For more information about TISM, watch my video of Damian Cowell discussing The Birth Of Uncool or How TISM Gatecrashed Melbourne Music.

Damian Cowell’s latest crowdfunded project, Damian Cowell's Disco Machine hosts a cavalcade of special guests, including Shaun Micallef, Tony Martin, Kathy Lette, Julia Zemiro, Sam Pang, Tim Rogers, Kate Miller-Heidke and Liz Stringer. Highlights from this opus include the Tim Rogers collaboration 'I'm Addicted To Moderation', 'Jesus Barista Superstar' and 'Groovy Toilet'. The Disco Machine has one more final concert in Adelaide.

Damian will be performing twelve shows as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. He describes his show Hara-Karaoke as "former TISM frontman Damian Cowell commits hara-karaoke to his back catalogue, (including his latest – Damian Cowell’s Disco Machine) – intercut with hilarious, surreal anecdotes about his past, present and future, all set to a disco beat." Hopefully we can expect to see some more TISM covers.
