Being involved as a humble photographer with the Reclink Community Cup here in Melbourne for almost a decade, I am so proud to see this unique charity football event now going National. Today at the media launch at the State Library, it was announced that the Community Cup will now be played in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Hobart and Brisbane. Ash Naylor and Kat Spazzy performed at the media launch with Megahertz president, Jon von Goes as the host.
Here is Ash Naylor's rendition of this classic punk song from Iggy & The Stooges, with a little bit of Up There Cazaly thrown in at the end.
With humble beginnings in 1993, where a game of The Tote Vs The Espy Rockdogs raised $500....it now attracts over 10,000 people in attendance in Melbourne and raises more than $100,000 for Reclink Australia. Last year with Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Adelaide it raised more than $215,000.
Reclink's CEO John Ballis states: "For Reclink the Community Cup is a time when the media - particularly the community radio sector and local musicians band together to help raise much needed funds to enable us to deliver sport, recreation and arts programs that make a huge difference to the live of the neediest in our community; programs that foster self-confidence, fight isolation, develop skills and establish connections and lasting friendships."
The year's theme for the Community Cup is "Smells Like Team Spirit", paying homage to Nirvana's classic album Nevermind, which is celebrating it's 25th Anniversary. ≈
