The SpiderBait gig was the last of the anniversary gigs for the Corner Hotel,
The Corner was celebrating 10 years of rock n roll, sweat and beers with its currant owners and also a chance to show off its scmick new renovations.
The band sounded awesome with brand spankin new P.A, the set was everything a die hard fan would have wanted with everything from the classic Goodies cover Run which they turned into a wigged out psych anthem.
Calypso was punked to the max a lot faster and the fuzzed up than the original they dedicated it to Wally Kempton a Melbourne indie icon who helped them get their first gig, hearing all these classic tracks brought back so many personal memories for myself, ive spent many a night at Spiderbait gigs, thrashing about getting kicked in the head within the moshers up the front.
The all time classic Old Man Sam was left till second last and it really sums up what Spiderbait gigs are all about rock n roll and drinking beer. The 'Bait really have got the rock n roll game down pat they know what songs to play to the get the crowd pumped, and they know how to build songs to a climax, that makes you want to pump your fist and throw your empty pot of beer into the crowd. They played quite a few songs they haven’t played in ages such as Footy an early classic to a few uncovered gems from 'Ivy and the Big Apples'. To end the night the played their awesome cover of Black Betty, I decided to relive old memories and run up the front and scream and yell and thrash about like I was 18 again.
The only thing that pissed me off about the gig was the lack of enthusiasm from the audience, it seems when you hit a certain age you lose you rock 'n' roll attitude, when you're 18 your down the front your screaming all the words, you're slamming with complete strangers and whether you incur broken limbs it doesn’t matter, then when you hit your late 20s you sit at the back of the bar you try and slur the words to the songs in a drunken stupor and you give these one handed half hearted claps.
My attitude is if the band put the effort so should the audience regardless of age, Melbourne Crowds need to find their rock spirit again.
Apart from that little bitch it was an awesome gig.
