The Corner is starting to feel like my second home, and looking at the bookings for the next couple of months… I don’t think that it’s going to stop! Tonight started off with a tight melodic set from Forgiven Rival.

The local boys did a good job to warm up the building crowd. They almost make me think that pop punk is making a comeback… It was great to see the Boys Night Out guys milling side stage to watch the opening support too.

Stealing O’Neal were the next band on and, well, my mother always said if you can’t say anything nice… I spent the bulk of their set in the Front Bar drinking beer.

The final support act for the night was Responder. I really liked these guys, and would have liked them even more if the sound had been consistently working for them tonight. If you like Jimmy Eat World, try and catch these guys. They’ve got great pop sensibilities.

This brings me to the reason that I came tonight, Canadian pop punkers Boys Night Out! The boys had been wandering around the venue and taking photos with fans prior to their set, an unaffected touch that didn’t go unnoticed.

I haven’t seen a pop punk band in a while, so it was quite interesting to see how much energy from their first album, Make Yourself Sick, translated into their new songs. Old favourites like 'Medicating' and 'I Got Punched In The Nose' were punctuated by new tracks like 'Get Your Head Straight', 'Reason Ain’t Our Long Suit' and 'Up With Me' (which sound a LOT heavier live).

Big Night Out put on a great show. It was definitely a risk bringing them out here – being that pop punk isn’t really the flavour of the month. I’m glad that the promoter took the risk. It’s great to see a band working for hard for a crowd, the banter was great, the energy didn’t let up and we got a Saturday night show!

The crowd was possibly the most entertaining thing about tonight though – there were fights breaking out, mosh, photos, and lots of beer... hindsight might have said I had too much beer.

It was loud and fun, and I drank too many Tradie’s Lemonades (you’ve got to try these things – Jack Daniels, Cointreau, lemonade and lime cordial). Pretty much all a good night out needs!
