Sydney 3 piece Theredsunband spent 2 months or so of this year winding their way around the countryside supporting Evermore on their latest tour.
The band, consisting of drummer John and sisters Sarah (vocals and guitar) and Lizzie (keyboard) released their debut album ‘Peapod’ late last year produced by Magic Dirt’s bass player Dean Turner.
The band first came about when John and Sarah quit university after, they admit, it became a “fucking drag” and spent their days writing and rehearsing music. A lack of musical child hoods and any classical training meant the girls managed to have fun. “[We] just listened to too much music and got silly ideas,” they say. Recently the band has started making a name for themselves, and a good one at that with their rock a pop influenced sounds.
The band are happy to explain who the aspire to be like. “All the grunge bands we listened to in the nineties! Singing - Mazzy Star and The Beach Boys, guitar - Veruca Salt and Magic Dirt, drums - The Velvet Underground and keyboards - The Dandy Warhols.”
The band must have thought they struck gold when a member of a band they list as a big influence jump on board for their debut album. “It was good. He’s [Dean Turner] a good guy. Coming from the perspective of a musician helped us relate.”
Despite their recent tour around Australia, the band are a little undecided as to whether they actually enjoy hitting the road. “It was very, very long. It was like a real job. Five shows a week and all that. I don’t think anyone could convince me to do anything like that again!”
However, the guys are keen to be diplomatic about whether they prefer the comfy studio or the great outdoors. “They both have their merits! I am dying to go into the studio now though, after two years away. It’s a good life on the road though, if a little tiring.”
Peapod which spawned the singles Pavement, Devil Song and Sleep Forever was pretty well received for a relatively unknown band and the group say they were surprised by just how well. “Yes, pleasantly. I think we have been successful, but there is a huge range of possibilities for bands. Like huge mansions in California and all that. I am happy with the record itself and glad that it wasn’t ignored. Now we can make another one. We are currently working on songs so that we will most likely make another album by the end of the year.”
