Shakin' Not Stirred: CC Martini
» CC Martini announces album launch and Melbourne residency - July 29, 2008
» CC Martini - Laundry, Vic - November 7, 2007

Picture the scene; I’m a mad scientist. But not one of those generic corporate ones; I’ve been hired to create the Ultimate Female Pop Star. So in goes a dash of raw Lil’ Kim (isn’t she always?), the charming eccentricity of Gwen Stefani and a hefty slice of M.I.A’s roughneck frankness and...well, look what I’ve created; a fiery-haired luminary I shall call...CC Martini. Mwahahaha.
$4 pizzas are a tough yearning for any mere mortal to resist. Sitting in Bimbo’s in Melbourne, enjoying a cheap-as pizza and a mid-arvo beer with a Miss CC Martini, talkin’ industry and that. Sure beats a fluorescent computer screen and a packed lunch. CC and band’s debut album “All The Way” hits stores May 10 (word of advice from your friendly neighbourhood Lisa: Buy It!) and first singles “Champagne Taste” and “Double Dutch” have already set many tongues a-waggin’.
““Champagne Taste” was the first song off the album and it’s basically about living beyond your means and having a rich lifestyle on a minimum credit card budget (laughs) and “Double Dutch”, well, basically the song came about after playing a hand clapping rhyming game with my sister at the beach. I wanted it to be cool and school yard, like in a "we're the king of the castle and you're a dirty rascal" kinda way. It's a very proud "we're hot and we know it" fun song to sing” says CC with a sassy grin.
In between bites of pizza (Me: Mushroom and Tomato; CC: Pumpkin Organico with Rosemary) I ask CC about her upcoming tour with none other than hip-hop sovereign Eve; “I really dig Eve and I’m really excited to be playing with her when she comes out next month. I’ve liked her for ages! I saw her something like 6 years ago when she performed with Destiny’s Child in Dublin!” she cries excitedly. CC is certainly fit for fandom herself; easily relatable with her audience, bold and a consummate show- woman. This is all may sound sycophantic, but it’s true- would I lie to you?
The general register of hard-hitting female artists in this day and age is slowly shrinking (gone are the days of Joan Jett or Chrissie Hynde; now the likes of Lindsay Lohan and Huge Gaping Vagina Hilton can easily buy the cover of Rolling Stone), who do you like who’s doing it for the sisters, CC? “Well, obviously Eve, and I really like Lil’ Kim, you know, she just doesn’t care if she’s too much for some people, you just have to make music for yourself and sometimes you feel like writing a love song and sometimes you’re....a bit angrier than that (laughs)”
Since were in a bar, CC, what’s your poison? “Vodka, lime and soda, nice and fresh. Or Pure Blonde if I’m in a beer mood”. It’s handy to know these things. Anyway, what’s on your dancecard for the future? World domination, perhaps? “I’m really looking forward to taking the band around Australia, and then I’m hoping to relocate overseas for a little while, might move to New York for a few months, and work on the second album material....maybe work Dr Dre or Eminem (laughs)”. I’d pay good pesos to see that.
Anyway, shameless plug time: CC and band launch the latest single, “Double Dutch” and a national tour supporting Eve at Revolver Upstairs in Melbourne this Saturday night, the 26th April. Cheap entry, economical booze and rock/hip-pop bangin’ till’ late. Could you really ask for more? Besides ten thousand dollars in cash. Come anyway!
