With their national tour well under way, guitarist Lachlan Scott talks about the bands' recent commercial success.
Something With Numbers third LP Engineering The Soul has been gracing the selves of your local CD store for the past month. The album saw the band travel to the hustling and bustling Brooklyn, New York to work with esteemed producer Tim O’Heir.
“With the previous two albums we’ve worked with Australian producers and Tim’s approach is a little different. It was more about getting a feel down when you record your parts,” says Lachlan Scott, guitarist.
O’Heir was clearly impressed by the five quirky Aussie guys, so much so that he sings their praises on the DVD that accompanies the limited edition CD, much to the amazement of Scott.
Engineering The Soul sees the band make a conscious effort to produce a catchy pop album, “It’s almost as if we’ve opened up a whole new market without even trying and the first time I played it to my parents they were like ‘Yes’ straight away. They didn’t need to take it away and listen to it for a few weeks and then said ‘Yeah, that’s good,” explains Scott.
For previous fans the new album sounds completely unlike past albums Etiquette and Perfect Distraction. According to Scott this is nothing more than the natural evolution of a band. Something With Numbers try to never make the same album twice, instead preferring to progress with each release.
Lead singer Jake Grigg’s lyrics and mind frame have an enormous impact on the sound of each album. Although he may not be the songwriter himself, Scott does have some understanding of the lyrical themes that are present on each record. “Jake’s always had a knack for writing lyrics that’s for sure. The first album was about the break down of a relationship, the second record was about chasing someone else and this album was about being with and being whole heartedly in love with a girl.” The topic of the next album is anybody’s guess.
The release- and re-release- of the new album sees the band tour nationally and, in Scott’s opinion, the band is more than knowledgeable in this field. “We’ve toured the country more times than I can remember. I am excited to go back on the road cause we haven’t actually toured in a year,” he states.
Just in case the album and the current tour isn’t enough for you to get your Something With Numbers fix, fear not as the band will be doing yet another national tour early to mid 2009.
