If you’ve never heard Evermore, or even heard of Evermore, then you must have been living under a rock. I can assure you these kiwi rockers have come a long way since their mentions on Triple J and music featuring on The OC promotional advertisements. With their second album release already making a name for itself on commercial radio, Real Life has charted to number #5 on Australian top albums with hit singles “Running”, “Light Surrounding You” and soon to be released single “Never Let You Go”. And to think this album is following up their Platinum first time release, Dreams.
It’s early in the morning when the phone rings, a publicist asking after my name and connecting me through to drummer, Dann Hume. He seems cheerful, perhaps because it’s a lot later in the day in Sydney as opposed to 7:45am in Perth. He also has no real hesitation to make small talk before we begin.
The Dwarf: Good morning Dann! How are you today?
Dann Hume: Morning! I’m very well thank you.
The Dwarf: Where abouts are you calling from?
DH: I’m at home at the moment—well, Sydney. Yeah. Well, the weather’s nice.
The Dwarf: Oh nice, I’m in Perth.
DH: Perth! I like Perth. Except it’s too far away. 5 hour flight, you know?
The Dwarf: It’s kind of a drag. I mean, it’s a lovely city except we don’t get that many gigs. International bands seem to miss us on their tour maps.
DH: Yeah. We’ll be sure to always come to Perth.
The Dwarf: You guy’s are from New Zealand, right? My entire background is also Kiwi, so I’ve been asked to send on compliments or such an awesome heritage.
DH: I’m feeling the Kiwi Love!
The Dwarf: The Spilt Enz Tour. How was that? Was that pretty cool? Because that was pretty recent.
DH: Yeah, that was like—the other day. It was good! We are massive fans of their music and it was just a real privilege to be sharing the stage with them and to be hanging around them and stuff. The background was just like… classic kiwi pop. It’s just unbelievable really.
The Dwarf: Any ideas for any other tours? I mean, you’ve got the Big Day Out coming up next year…
DH: (laughs) Yeah, that’s a good idea, we should do the Big Day Out! No, I mean like… last year when we were on we were with all these other bands like Slipknot and it was sorta weird… like it would be Slipknot and we’d play… But this year it’s The Killers and Muse, which is a lot more like our kind of field. I think we’re gonna have a really good time. And we’re going to be playing on the main stage this year too.
The Dwarf: I’ll be sure to see you then when you play in Perth. You guys originally got picked up by Triple J like most other starting out bands, and then all the gossip went around that you were playing “That Band” playing on The OC ad. How did that happen?
DH: Well they just started using our song… I guess it’s just a good way to get your song out there. I mean, when you get your song out there in the start, it’s pretty unheard of and not much happens. I think it was only on the actual show once, some party scene… it was bad, you could hardly hear it, but I think it was only used in Australia.
The Dwarf: The new video clip for “Light Surrounding You”, it’s very pretty, I love it; you have the actress Emily Browning well known for her role in “A Series of Unfortunate Events” featuring in it. How did you come about getting her into the clip?
DH: We just asked her to be on our video and she said yes. Yeah, just this little project to do on the weekend. She’s a really cool chick.
The Dwarf: Who writes the songs in the band?
DH: We all write the songs, we sorta… sit around together.
The Dwarf: Sometimes only one person only writes the songs. Because you guys are brothers, do you guys ever fight much when you’re doing that? You’ve been together for a long time as a band, eight years now?
DH: (laughs) No, no, we don’t really fight at all. We’re all just get along. And yeah, eight years.
The Dwarf: Any overseas tours coming up?
DH: Yeah, after the Big Day Out we’re going to go do some tours in the East Coast of the US, and because we’re getting played on the radio over there, we’re gonna go around doing that for a while. It’s going to be a lot of fun being around in this mass of new territory.
The Dwarf: A new abum anytime soon? Anything new you can tell me that’s coming up for Evermore?
DH: We’re just staying fresh, we already seem like we have this new record and probably wont start recording until sometimes next year.
