Dallas Crane guitarist / vocalist Pete Satchell prefers Vegemite to honey. I was curious . . . . so I asked.
If you’ve ever wondered about Dallas Crane, now’s the perfect time to satisfy your curiosity. The highly anticipated new album Factory Girls is poised for release, while the first single to be lifted from the album is already causing controversy.
With its raw, melodic appeal, Curiosity is an indication of what’s to come.
“Yeah we tried to strip it back, and it’s doing its thing. It’s a good taste of what’s on the new album," says Satchell.
But it’s the accompanying film clip that’s caused a reaction.
“It’s meant to be a bit of fun. If you listen to the lyric of the song, it pretty much sums up what it’s all about."
Curiosity is the perfect prelude to the release of Dallas Crane’s best work to date.
“We’re always going to be Dallas Crane, and this album has a lot of that in it," explains Stachell.
“Dave (guitars / vocals) and I . . . . did a bit of listening to our favourite songs over the years, and we came up with some ingredients as to why they’re so great. Rhythm, melody, harmony, lyric and chorus. So we were conscious about putting them into this one."
So are Dallas Crane happy with the outcome?
“Yeah, Dave and I are pretty happy with the songs that we’ve written for this one, and with everyone’s contributions - from Shan (drums) and Pat (bass) who contribute enormously to the completion of the songs. We’re all very, very proud I suppose you’d say."
Factory Girls, the second album for Albert Productions, has taken shape with producers Jonothon Burnside (Sleepy Jackson / Eskimo Jo) and Wayne Connolly (The Vines / You Am I). So what was it like working with two producers?
“We’d already worked with Wayne on the last record – because he gets the best sound possible. He’s the man when it comes to that! And we’ve been impressed with some of John’s work . . . and it worked out well.
“Having two people co-produce, there was always going to be that element that each of them would do things differently, so everyone learnt a bit from doing it . . . and we were pretty conscious of compromise, and a bit of give and take . . . just because it was a different way of doing things."
It might have been a different way of doing things, but it’s good to know some things never change. I asked Pete if there were any major dummy spits.
“There’s always major dummy spits when you record an album," laughs Satchell.
“In any sort of creative process where there’s more than just one person, there’s always going to be difference in opinions. There were a couple of moments, but that was after 14 hour days. When you work so close with someone, and you’re working at the same goal so intensely, things are bound to pop up like that”.
Factory Girls is launching with a free instore gig at Melbourne’s Bourke Street J.B. Hi Fi on the release date.
“We’ll be there to sign, and take photos with people and the like, so it should be good fun."
Dallas Crane will embark on a national tour following the album release. There’s currently only a few major shows confirmed, but the Dwarf was assured that more dates will be posted.
“That’s definitely going to change. There’s going to be plenty of regional shows added in”.
With a looming album release and a national tour to follow, the air of expectation has never been greater for Dallas Crane. This time they’ve delivered, with a modern blend of harmony, rhythm, and raw rock attitude, with a lyrical content to match.
Quite simply – it rocks!
