They say you should never judge a book by its cover, but in the case of Toby Tobias’s album Space Shuffle, you are permitted to do so.

This album is more 90’s than The Backstreet Boys, Kepper jeans and Timezone being a cool place to hang out. A large percentage of the album is instrumental and relies heavily on pretty un-hook-worthy riffs, the choice of samples and instruments sounds a lot like Toby actually bought the software in the 90’s.

Don’t get me wrong, the 90’s produced some great musical ideas and was the most popular era of ‘one hit wonders’, but the range of recording equipment that you can get for nothing (or next to) should be resulting in higher quality tones than this product emits. Decade bashing aside, Toby’s bass lines are effectively hypnotic and his dynamics are clearly the focus of his music, the tracks definitely take you on a journey. With some software updates and Toby taking some musical risks I’d look forward to hearing his next release.
