WRONG WAY: GO BACK. That message is to all those still, after my previous warning, looking to Pinky Beecroft and the White Russians for the mad, sexy circus that was Machine Gun Fellatio. They’re gone: get over it. Somethin’ Somewhere Better is the reinvention of Mr Beecroft. The audience can deduce that he is no longer content to write chrome-slick, blazoning tunes with crude sexual references, mannequin torso strumming and other wide-ranging acts of debauchery and sacrilege. There is no KK Juggy in a sudsy bath here, no sir. But that’s not a bad thing, even as much as we all did love MGF. Pinky Beecroft no longer wants to be your Dirty Fucking Whore. Well, I don’t know, I....I won’t speak for him...
Tracks like current single Someone for Everyone and I Will Tear It Down To Make You Happy have a dark kind of melancholy to them, one that the broody yet charming Beecroft pulls off well. Luckily, Pinky has kept the catchy hooks and flowing beats (administered by the White Russians; Christian McBride on drums, Nick Stewart on guitar and Ben T on bass) he had, and we adored, in MGF, and made them his own in this project. This Song Has Only Got Happy Words always makes me laugh live; Pinky is, if nothing else, a character. A prize lyricist, the man has the kind of telepathic writing style that speaks of your own experience. And he’s right; it is gonna be “the one you wanna hear before you go”.
Real Good Time continues the feel for knowing and socially sentient lyricism; “Got some leftover chicken and some fine Italian bread...OK, I lied about the bread baby, but I got some cheap red wine. So you should come over, and have a good time”. Simple, yet effective. Floor is quite delicate, despite the lyrics; “I might not be so good in bed, but I’m alright on the floor” and the instrumentation is sparse and light, to support the lyrics, but not overwhelm them, and Pinky’s vocals do the same. Personal favourite track has gotta be My Haircut Will Come Back Around; I don’t know if Pinky ever feels ridiculous or uncool or out of the loop (whatever loop that is), and the song is probably about celebrity, fame, musicianship, but for us nerds and freaks and geeks, it’s truly a summoning of sense; things will be okay. Pinky seems to have that effect.
