Various Artists - Artless Armchair Compialtion (Album)
The Artless Armchair is a compilation of Central Coast acoustic artists, who came together to create a sort of snapshot in time, commenting on the state of the local music scene in the Central Coast. Each artist has added his or her individual style and uses it as a commentary and way of expressing themselves. The music on this compilation ranges from simple structured ukulele songs to multi-layered dance tracks, although these styles vary in great lengths, each artist is joined together through a friendship and compassion for the music they make.
The Artless Armchair started off as a conception by the artist Happy Phlegm, who started the Artless Armchair MySpace, as a way to express how he thought music should be made, the idea was then taken further by Lesstalk Records who used this same idea as a way to put on mini local festivals in various live music locations around the Central Coast. And now conceptualised into a compilation CD. Some of the artists that feature on this CD include The (Temperamental) Pocket, Skippy The Bush Kangaroo, Crab Smasher, Anal Discharge and A Dissapointing Fireworks Display. They have all contributed magnificent tracks that compliment each other nicely.
Some of the standout tracks that feature on the compilation include Women by Lucy Afarensis; this track is a children's version cover of a violent punk song by Anal Discharge. Using their lyrics and chords to turn it into a childs song sung by what sounds like 5 or 6 small children. Another great track which I thought was a major standout was the track by an up and coming local band called Stolen Memories, they are a group of 17 year olds who sound like they are really rocking out on this track, with great production and a great hook you may find yourself coming back to this track time and time again. A Sydney band Marquee Marquee have kind of explored the sound that Interpol created and created a great (yet slightly overproduced) derivitive of that sound, would be great to see live.
With only a few downfall tracks, the quality of the sound and the packaging is supurb. Worth the four bucks I paid for it.
I would definately recommend purchasing this CD, not only because it is really cheap, but also because from the first listen you can really hear the amount of effort these artists put into their bands and creating this music for others to hear, and it definately need to be heard by the masses, because its great.
