Yes! Tinnitus!

Don’t be fooled by the 71-minute time frame when you pop this CD into your stereo. It is really just a 35-minute album that plays itself twice - after some fascinating and artistic 56K modem dial-up sounds that is. Never mind if you didn’t want a second listen, you get one anyway!

Yes! Tinnitus! is the second album from Cardiff band Shooting At Unarmed Men. Led by former McLusky member Jon Chapple, the band is rumoured to have started out in 1999 as a joke. This 3-piece band is made up of two bass guitarists, two drummers, one electric guitarist and two vocalists – you do the math, I’m confused already.

Much was my surprise to see track 10 at a play length of 42:49. It was after about 15-minutes I had this overwhelming sense of déjà vu. I started to think the songs were a little similar; or maybe they were the same songs just performed a little differently? No, it was just the same tracks playing another rotation. I was planning on listening to the CD again anyway to aid in my review. I was actually a little disappointed as I was hoping for 40-odd minutes of B-sides. Actually my first thought was that the band was trying to create the world’s longest song – they disappointed me there too.

Shooting At Unarmed Men is a pop/punk/rock band with a sound described by some as making them feel like they are in a UK pub. Yes! Tinnitus! is an interesting album with some great guitar riffs and drumming. The band’s music has been described as “tunes you can whistle, dance or fight to, depending on your preference, consumption or I.Q level”.

Highlights – “All Hail Sergio”, “Girls Music”, “Pat Yourself On The Proverbial”, “In-Flight Instructions Are A Joke – Say I”.

Lowlights – “I Cry For No Man” and “I Cry For No Man” the second time around.
