Lilith Lane - Winter / Holy Smoke (Single)
Maybe known to some for her involvement in Melbourne band Black Pony Express, and probably not known to others at all, Lilith Lane has delivered her first solo release; an album which was recorded in three weeks at the end of last year, and, by all accounts, first single Winter/Holy Smoke is a fairly good indication that Lilith Lane may just be worth listening out for.
Given, it must be said; Winter is a fairly run-of-the-mill, piano-based, folk song. But it is good - plain and simple; it has it’s own sound, it’s original, and is just simply appealing. Quietly opening with a soft piano intro and instantly striking vocals, we’re led into a build of depth as the guitar, bass and drums subtly introduce themselves and round out the song. Nothing ground breaking, but it works really well.
It’s the second track where a real impression is made. Holy Smoke this time lets the guitar lead the way, bringing out a complete folk/blues/rock band sound and creating dynamics which are utterly convincing and ultimately appealing. The depth in this track allows plenty of room for Lilith Lane to show off her impressive vocal range, completing and rounding off the tune perfectly, be that in an all round style similar to that of say, an Australian Tori Amos, or Martha Wainwright.
Between these two tracks we’re treated to an impressive glimpse as to what Lilith Lane is capable of; be that the slower, moody piano driven beauty, of Winter or a more up beat, attractive rock sound, of Holy Smoke, it would seem Lilith Lane is definitely worth keeping an ear open for.
