Lisa Mitchell may be remembered from Australian Idol; the 16 year old girl with an acoustic guitar and slightly annoying, whiney high pitched vocals. Since then she’s released 2 EPs, the latest being Welcome to the Afternoon.
Going back to my ‘whiney, high pitched vocals’ comment,I obviously never really enjoyed Miss Mitchell, but I put it down to jealousy. She’s pretty, plays a guitar, and travels the world while the rest of us slave over our studies. She leads the life I want to lead. For her latest effort however, I tried to open my mind to her genuine talent and was surprised to find some growth in her song writing ability. Her voice is very distinctive so it takes a while to get used to, similar to that of Joanna Newsom and Julia Stone, but she’s slowly growing on me. This is mostly due to the fact that her songs are so sweet; Neapolitan Dreams really stands out with its xylophone and choir, it’s the nicest song on the album, when compared to the darker See You When You Get Here which is the first single from the EP.
The fourth and last song A Little Ramblin’ Blues For Any Hour (damn EP’s are short!) is co-written by Evermore’s Dann Hume (who also produced the album) is a decent song in its own right, but Lisa just couldn’t carry it. It’s a heavier track that just leaves her voice vulnerable, sounding so delicate amongst the many instruments.
Having overcome my initial jealousy and determination to hate her, i actually began to enjoy her EP and even chased up her last one. Glad that she hasn't become another 'Idol' forgetful, Lisa Mitchell really does have the qualities to succeed. If Welcome to the Afternoon is anything to go by, when she gets on to that full length album she's going to stun.
