Brilliant Fanzine - Then Comes Monday (Album)
With smooth, melodic Brit vocals Brilliant Fanzine don’t sound like Aussie talent. However this local band, brandishing some talent from near and far, certainly know how to deliver a fine tune.
‘One in 10,000’ features on their debut album Then Comes Monday, which was their very first release from their EP of the same name. The track may sound familiar from some decent airplay on Triple J upon its release in 2005, and it’s a pretty good one, possibly the best on the album. ‘One in 10,000’ is the only song that really has some edge to it.
The first single ‘Change For You’ is definitely not an album highlight (a wonder why it was chosen for the first release) yet that’s not to say it’s a bad song. It’s melodic but not catchy enough (check out the single review). Coming back from their break “Brilliant Fanzine’s” sound hasn’t really changed which can be good, but has its downsides. While listening to the album I was waiting for something to really grab me. The CD kept playing and after around 45mins it stopped. I didn’t even notice the songs changeover, that I put down to a consistent style and mood, which is nice, but not groundbreaking stuff.
This isn’t to give a negative review but there is something lacking. There’s something else needed to give it that extra edge. Consistency is good, but for a first release I’d have thought that there’d be more variation…just more.
Then Comes Monday has some great little tracks though. The whole album is sweet, melodic and definitely ‘easy listening’ but kind of repetitive. I don’t want to put anyone off it though, so it’s worth a listen and it’s definitely a decent first effort. I have a feeling these guys can only get better.
