Foo Fighters - The Pretender (Single)
» Foo Fighters April/May Australian Tour announced! - November 25, 2007
Let’s be honest, singles are only about one song. This one is about 'The Pretender', and it’s a welcome return to the formula the Foo Fighters do best. A catchy as hell chorus, plenty of screaming interspersed with some smooth melodic singing (the introduction is a good example), enough speed changes to hold your attention and the grating guitars and pummeling drums that have proved so popular over the years.
The single also contains a demo of 'Come Alive' which I found repetitive and boring, and 'If Ever' which was a little slow for my liking, but would be well suited to the slow dance scene in a Hollywood movie. A video for 'Monkey Wrench' live in Hyde Park is also included, and the performance is very good other than the fact that Grohl cannot sing the “One last thing before I go I never wanted anymore than I could fit…” bit live.
With 'The Pretender' Dave Grohl proves he hasn’t lost the plot just yet, while Taylor Hawkins reminds us he can bang sticks on hide with the best of them. I’ll be honest, I had lost faith in The Foo Fighters after their last two albums, but this is the best Foo Fighters song since the many gems they released on There Is Nothing Left To Lose.
