The long awaited debut (do you count their previously released live album as their first?) album from Melbourne Funk n’ Roll outfit Mammal has arrived! Titled The Majority, it is 11 brand new tracks of fast-paced, raw and energetic funkiness.
The first track is the title track from their previously released live album The Aural Underground and it is typical Mammal funk rock with a message of the story so far; an introduction to who they are and what their intentions are; “We aint no hit machine, we’re just here to please your soul”. The album’s title track lends us an insight into the pointlessness of bigotry with its statement that we are all a minority in some way, shape or form and therefore prejudice against others seems rather pointless.
This album is frenetic for the most part. It slows down mid-way with songs like Mr. Devil and Religion but for the majority (excuse the pun) it is non-stop heart-pumping beats. I was surprised to see no songs repeated on this album from either The Aural Underground or the Nagasaki In Flames/Slaves single. These boys really have amassed themselves a nice little collection of work in a short period of time. It is also a pleasure to finally have a recorded version of tracks like Burn Out and Hollywood Shrine, heard at concerts quite a while back but not forgotten.
Front-man Zeke Ox shares with the listener a greater range of his vocals this time around. Not only do we experience the talk and scream style we are used to but we also get a more melodic side when he sings. The final hidden track at the end of Living In Sin is a great example.
The Majority is a great blend of heavy, speedy funk and slower melodic grooves. The first single from the album Smash The Piñata would have to be my favourite choice. Do yourselves a favour and get a copy on August 30th, 2008.
