One Night Only - Started A Fire (Album)

Album reviews for One Night Only:
» Started A Fire - One Night Only

One Night Only are another indie pop band trying to make a name for themselves in the UK. Starting off playing cover songs of the likes of Blink 182 and New Found Glory back in 2003, their music has definitely moved away from the pop-punk sounds of the aforementioned bands.

Started A Fire is the Yorkshire boys' debut release and it’s a bit of a mixed bag really. George Craig handles the vocal duties well and the band as a whole seems to mesh fairly well. Album opener Just For Tonight is the stand out track of the album and grabs your attention and gets your foot tapping with the guitars, drums and keyboards combining well with George’s vocals.

It’s About Time is also worth a listen with its catchy chorus and melodies sure to keep heads bopping along and the bands debut single You and Me continues the trend and style of the previous tracks.

And this is probably where the album's biggest weakness starts becoming apparent; there isn’t really much in the way of diversity in the album and it all begins to start sounding a bit generic.

The album fails to keep your attention like the album openers and begins to sound just like any other generic indie release, the song Sweet Sugar does seem to stand out a bit more than the other tracks around it towards the end of the album with a great little horn section that ups the tempo but it all feels like a case of too little too late.

There’s nothing really bad about Started A Fire, there’s just nothing really spectacular about it though either. There is nothing on the album that really sets One Night Only apart from the rest of the pop-indie bands that are flooding out of the UK at the moment.

The album is worth a listen for the opening tracks especially the epic sound of album opener Just For Tonight.

The track however is rather deceptive leaving the listener expecting great things for the remainder of the album however it fails to live up to the standard Just For Tonight sets.

Overall Started A Fire is not a bad effort for a debut release and will probably satisfy most pop-indie lovers needs, but the young lads from Yorkshire will have to step things up when they head into the studio the next time if they want to distinguish themselves apart from the pack.
