Sunpilots - Spotlight in the Sun

At times it can seem like it takes some bands a year and a day to release a single. This is surely the case for Sydney locals, The Sunpilots.

Forming in early 2005 and releasing their debut self-titled EP in mid 2006 the band has finally released its first single “Spotlight In The Sun”. I am tempted to say it was well worth the wait but being that this single was already included on their EP it is nothing new to my ears. But old favourites are still good favourites. And this old favourite has been dressed up in a new suit and tie, with it being about the third version of this track I have heard to date.

Sunpilots vocalist Raj defines his state of mind regarding this song, “I was in a pretty dark hole when I started writing the song, and I finished writing it just after I climbed out”. “Spotlight In The Sun” is an emotional, guitar-driven rock piece with harmonious vocals and a sound reminiscent of old-school Live meets Pearl Jam.

The first 500 limited edition singles come with bonus material including the film clip. Newtown’s Vanguard Theatre is the setting for this rather disappointing film clip to a great song. “Spotlight In The Sun” is but just a taste of what we can expect from The Sunpilots when their debut album is released later on this year.
