Sodastream - Reservations (Album)
Seriously, as the Australian music scene experiences countless rise and falls this band has proved to be committed to making some fine tunes.
I may not be a fan from the beginning (I’ve only recently been thrust into the world that is Sodastream) but I’m thoroughly impressed with what I hear.
Sodastream have been around 10 years, providing music to our sorry souls. They have an impressive back catalogue, which I recommend you check out if you haven’t already, and ‘Reservations’ is one of their finest albums yet.
They manage to mix sweet sounds with an incredible ability to evoke imagery through their lyrics. Their sound can be compared to that of Elliot Smith, a master of acoustic. Karl's vocals are also soothing, complimenting the simple but infectious melody.
‘Reservations’ is an album you can just sit and listen to. It could be described as a sad album but listeners will find it has a calming effect. The title track is one of the highlights, the mood is slightly uplifting and the rare use of harmonica is really nice to hear along with the smooth double bass of Pete. It simply is a great track and I commend Sodastream on their image evoking lyrics. The very same can be said about the tracks “twin lakes” and “tickets to the fight”
The album is a tad different to the others, heading towards a more melancholy track and occasionally picking up a happy trail, but overall encompasses a wistful effect. It’s a more personal album; softer than their 2005 EP ‘Take Me With You When You Go’ (arguably their best work) but still nevertheless Sodastream.
For those who miss the sweet sounds of good music, this is pure magic within the confines of a silver disc.
