There is nothing like a mirror-ball stack-hat to cement the image of a band into your mind. If the music isn’t memorable then the singer certainly will be. I saw Mammal live a few months ago now and I have to say that everything about them – not just that beacon of light shining forth from the singer’s head – was memorable. It was remiss of me not to purchase the EP that very night they were supporting Cog, but several months later and a free copy now in my possession things are looking good. The same can also be said for Mammal with their popularity and awareness on the rise.
Melbourne based Mammal have just recently celebrated their first birthday as a band. Their self-titled EP showcases exactly what the band is all about. Fronted by ex Full Scale mic man Ezekiel Ox, Mammal are all about high energy, heavy, fast-paced infectious beats. With a stage presence that somehow makes its way onto the EP, Ox has a powerful and energy charged set of vocal chords that produce a sound and clarity not heard too often in bands these days.
The self-titled five track EP races ahead with four heart-pounding, head nodding, foot stomping tracks before it finally slows down a notch for the last track. There is so much spirit and energy in these tracks and they are all injected with infectious beats and lyrics. I defy you or any crowd to not start yelling out the title of track #3 half way through the song. It is not necessary to know the lyrics, as the important thing is the feeling of being a part of the music whilst screaming ‘Hell Yeah!’.
I hadn’t heard these songs in months but after one listen to the EP I found the memories coming back all too clear. The stage moves, the effort and emotion put forth from the band, the angular guitars, the frenetic drumming and those succinct vocals and yes, who could forget that mirror-ball helmet? It is worth adding a pic of it in place of the EP cover I think. My favourite track would have to be the first one on the EP ‘New Breed Judas’. For those of you out there who are sick and tired of the old rock dogs, try the new Mammal.
