Raveonettes, The - Lust Lust Lust (Album)
Frequenters of the music forums, I’d heard the talk about The Raveonettes but not the band. Worshippers of the Danish duo may find this a stupid move considering the obvious brilliance that they possess. So I have been late to hop on the “Raveonettes” monochromatic bandwagon, but i feel i caught a lift at a good time. So I’m two full length albums behind...Lust Lust Lust is pretty good place to start anyway because it made me want to go back and find out more.
Beginning with Aly, Walk With Me, its haunting introduction and flow into the chorus is a little spine tingling, but just wait till you reach the end. It’s like you’ve been beaten on the head with Foo’s electric guitar and your ears are combusting with the sound of. One record highlight is You Want The Candy. The combined unwavering, whispering vocals beg you to come bop along to their 50’s inspired goodness, and though you try to hold back...the urge is too strong and by the end, indeed you do want to taste more of the sweet stuff they have to offer.
Track 12, The Beat Dies is modern music’s lullaby. Wagner plays heavy on distortion, even the drums crackle, but it manages to sound soothing which is purely a result of Foo’s vocals. The lyrics are dark, nothing new there (“The second love feels like rape...the beat dies silence”) but sung by her, they sound so gosh darn sweet.
Though LLL seems to be a little softer than their previous records, it still sounds like The Raveonettes; it’s consistent but not boring. I must admit, some tracks do sound similar but i put that down to them knowing what works, and using it. Their sound has definitely evolved over time, but depending on how you like your tunes, conventional or otherwise, whether that’s a good thing is up to you. Two of their previous albums, Chain Gang of Love and Whip It On, experimented with performing all songs in B flat major and minor respectively so i was expecting another quirk on this album. Although there are none to be found, it is clearly their most cohesive record and provides on more than one occasion, a catchy tune that will keep your faith in check.
