It seems every man and his dog is a singer-songwriter at the moment. It’s as though they wake up one morning thinking “What the world needs is another earnest young man with an acoustic guitar and unkempt facial hair singing about his feelings. That’s the job for me!”
Josh Pyke is one of these men who have had that epiphany and 'Lines On Palms' is his latest single. Sadly, Pyke’s revelation doesn’t translate in to passion in his music. 'Lines On Palms' is a spectacular nothing. Bland, boring fluff. Music that wouldn’t sound out of place on the radio at the supermarket or in an elevator.
The verse starts off jumpy enough, sounding remarkably similar to the The Proclaimers “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” minus the catchy bits and unfortunately it just goes downhill from there. The chorus is forgettable. And Pyke’s lyrics have you asking yourself ‘is that incredibly deep or does that not make any sense at all?’ such as “A strong wind who believes that there’s nothing left to try for.”
Pyke is obviously a talented musician, he plays the majority of the instruments on his debut albumMemories & Dust. But as he asks us “I keep trying and I won’t quit and that must be worth something more” I’m not sure if just trying is actually enough.
