Velvet Revolver - Libertad (Album)
» Velvet Revolver Postpone Australian Tour - December 3, 2007
Ever seen a sticker on the front of an album, listing a “rock royalty” line-up, and then the album shatters all your expectations and completely blows you away? No? I haven’t either. This album was mediocre rock at best, and would not have been recorded if the big names weren’t attached to it.
You can’t help but wonder if money was the sole reason for Velvet Revolver coming together. What rock fan wouldn’t be curious to hear how Scott Weiland and Slash would sound together on the one album? It just makes perfect marketing sense – these guys have no other gig going, why not grab some more cash while their names are still worth something…
Sure, INXS cashed in with their reality tv show Rockstar: INXS, but they managed to come up with a cracker of an album and some great hits. Maybe the songs aren’t as timeless as some Hutchence-era stuff, but they are worthy of the INXS label nonetheless.
Weiland has sounded better, and Slash just doesn’t shred like he used to. Duff, Matt and Dave? Ha! Libertad just goes to show that, sometimes, the sum of all parts doesn’t add up to much at all.
