Acid Eyeliner - Future Lies (Album)
If success was measured by effort, then Acid Eyeliner would’ve “made it” long ago. The Sydney three-piece has been hard at work over the last couple of years, gigging extensively and building their fan base, as well as being voted as one of the final three bands in Sony BMG’s Uncharted competition. You’ve got to admire a band like Acid Eyeliner for giving the business such a crack, as they drop their debut LP Future Lies.
From a production-based perspective, the independently-crafted album sounds impressive. The band has a knack for crafting catchy pop-rock tunes, as opening tracks Future Lies and Kissing You In The Driveway indicate. Penny Lane, one of the band’s most recognised songs is present again on the album, and remains a standout track.
Looking at the record on an entirely musical platform, the flaws in Future Lies are noticeable. Vocalist Lukey Lukess sings with a one-dimensional voice that, whilst never attempting to go beyond its limitations, sounds uninspired and slightly bland. Furthermore, the lyrics are underwhelming, leaving the listener feeling as though something is missing.
Nobody can accuse Acid Eyeliner of not giving their all, and the band should be commended for the amount of effort they’ve put into the creation of the album. Yet if Future Lies is any indication, the band is still a little off the mark.
