Stereo MCs - Double Bubble (Album)
Get On It opens Double Bubble with a bang and the pace doesn’t slow for the length of Stereo MCs sixth and latest album.
The genre defying hip-hop/electronica/Brit-pop group out of Nottingham - Stereo MC’s, was formed in 1989 by vocalist Rob Birch(Rob B), and DJ/producer Nick Hallam (The Head). The current line-up includes Ian Rossiter (Owen If), Cath Coffey and Rachel Birch. Stereo MC’s aren’t just famous for creating their own great music, they are renowned re-mixers as well, with credits including Madonna and U2.
What’s incredible about listening to Stereo MCs is that these guys (namely founding members Birch, Hallam and Rossiter) are quite possibly old enough to be your dads. However, the music Stereo MCs have consistently produced would have you believe they are a new band operating at their creative peak, and Double Bubble is no exception. Perhaps the freshness of this particular album can be partly attributed to working with new producer Tic Toc, who was in fact born the same year Stereo MCs released their first album.
But let’s talk about the music itself. Double Bubble is 11 tracks of get-down-and-party goodness. If there ever was a CD that should be sold with a “May induce bouts of uncontrollable dancing” warning, then this is it. This is true right from track one all the way to the end, and then over to the second bonus disk entitled Bonus Bubble, which features five additional dance-alicious tracks. It’s so hard to talk about album favourites on Double Bubble, they are all top notch. I suppose if you held a gun to my head I’ve have to pick, Get On It (track 1), There Here and Now (track 2), Karaoke (track 3), City Lights (track 4), Gringo (track 5)… oh hang on, I’m basically just listing the contents of the album. Seriously, you can put this CD in your car, or load it into your iPod for a week and it won’t sound stale if you leave it on repeat. It’s great, top quality and fun electronica – a genre that to its own detriment often takes itself far too seriously.
If you’ve been searching for something fun, fresh and new to spice up that party you’ve been planning then definitely check out Stereo MCs' Double Bubble. Your guests will thank you.
Double Bubble is out now through Liberator/Warner.
