After meeting in Edinburgh, Scotland Zoe Randell (Paddy Mann, Grand Salvo) and Steve Hassett (Wagons) immediately realised a musical connection between each other. Returning back home to Melbourne the two began writing together as Luluc. Their debut album Dear Hamlyn, written and recorded in an attic of an old Fitzroy Mansion, is a collection of uncomplicated but often meaningful songs.
At first listen you quickly realise the simplicity of the quiet and unobtrusive music. Randell’s soft, whisper like deep voice is warming and striking to say the least. Hassett’s playing compliments the vocal melodies impeccably.
The album looks at departure, sadness and future hopes. It would be hard to pick a stand out track, but songs like Black Umbrella and Body on the Water really emphasise Randell’s voice and how she uses it so well without over singing. The production really does capture the atmosphere of an old attic and makes the album sound very intimate.
Diversity is something the album may be lacking. But with that one criticism, Luluc have crafted a beautifully simple debut album and let's hope it's not another two years before a second release.
