a year in the sun

One year down the road and Pete Murray has released Year in the Sun, his follow up DVD of the album, See the Sun which reached 18 on the top 100 album charts for 2005.

A Year In The Sun briefly touches on the making of the album, but this feature lasts only 8 minutes leaving the viewer feeling empty.

Tour footage is included on the DVD and features interesting anecdotes from the band. In one scene the bands drummer, Andrew Sylvio claims that in the song 'Class A' he performs “the best drum solo… in history”, a big call, but it does get the crowd clapping along.

The four catchy singles from the album; 'Better Days', 'Class A', 'Opportunity' & 'George’s Helper' are included with the music video clips. Although stunningly beautiful songs, the video clips for 'Better Days' and 'Opportunity' are very similar. My favourite clip was 'Class A', for its feel good rocking vibe. To accompany the clips, the dvd includes a ‘the making of’ feature.

The DVD includes 7 live tracks from various music festivals including; The Falls Festival, Pink Pop and The Blues & Roots Festival in Byron Bay. By far, my favourite track would be 'Remedy' for the smooth slide guitar work exhibited by Pete Williamson which captures the vibe of The Falls Festival.

The stand out feature of the DVD is the short film, 'Ten Feet Tall' - based on the song of the same name. The film is a tragic tale about a husband and a father who have to deal with a loss and challenges the idea that butterflies can’t fly at night. This amazing, touching, short film features the work of Sam Johnson (The Secret Life of Us) as the character Tim and Michael Veitch as Doug.

The DVD, A Year in the Sun, seems a bit half-baked. It’s a DVD suited to Pete Murray’s existing fan base who will appreciate the live clips, but as it lacks slightly in content the casual viewer is likely to be disappointed. Although what is provided is good, it would have been nice to get a more comprehensive inside view to the process to make the album. Overall 7 / 10
