River Rocks 2015

I first heard of this special day of music in Geelong called River Rocks, when Spencer P Jones told me a cheeky story backstage after a gig. He was raving how bloody good the day was. I finally attended my first River Rocks last year, when I witnessed a very emotional Tumbleweed headlining set. With bassist Jason "Jay" Curley passing away a couple of month earlier, it was unknown at the time if this would be Tumbleweed's final ever concert. The good news was that this year they did come back with their successful "SuperGalactaphonic National Tour" in August and September.

Some of the other bands in last year's River Rocks bill included Geelong's favourite rock sons Warped, Sun God Replica, Nunchukka Superfly, Kim Salmon & The Surrealists and a totally wild incendiary set by HITS. The performance by HITS from Brisbane was such a highlight that attending this year's River Rocks there was a new drinking game - have a drink when somebody walked passed wearing a HITS T-Shirts. At least three band members I photographed on the day were wearing one and there was another dozen or so more in the audience.

Once you attend a River Rocks event in Geelong, you are totally hooked. It is such a unique event but it's not just the rock bands on the bill. It is the wild combo of great bands plus the passionate Geelong audience. The music loving Geelong crowd are a rambunctious bunch, so at the end of the day you can expect to see people dangling from the ceiling, shouting and carrying on and lots of stage diving.

For example this final song from this year's headliner, Cosmic Psychos - their classic ode to David Lee Roth.

I wasn't able to video every band on the bill. The sets by The Meanies and the reformed Mustang (with The Casanova's Damo Campbell now in the lineup) on The Barn Stage was totally nuts. I was lucky to grab just a handful of photographs before I had to move out of the mayhem. I was only able to grab some videos of Cosmic Psychos by exiting the front of the stage and then shooting some footage from the side of the stage. Other bands I had some technical issues with my videos, so apologies for the other bands that I missed out.

There was so many highlights to mention. It was great to see the return of Killerbirds, who I Iast photographed at a bleary eyed 2AM slot at The Pony in 2009. I have been patiently waiting six long years for this rockin' trio to return and they didn't disappoint. There is a reason why there is a faded Killerbirds sticker on Ross Knight's (Cosmic Psychos) well worn low slung bass guitar.

But with my workload I don't have time to waffle on about how great each band on the day was. That is why I present this video gig review.

You can relive some of the action of River Rocks 2015 and if you have never attended but heard about this event, these videos sure are an eye opener. Next year will be the ninth year of River Rocks at the Barwon Club Hotel and I am sure that 2016 will be bigger and better than ever.

GO THE HACK! See you at River Rocks 2016.
