Once again Brisbane played host to one of the countries premium metal festivals, Over Cranked. With an impressive line up of both international and local acts it was a day set to be full of sonic induced slaughter. Short haired hardcore fans met the long haired metal kids in the mix and somewhere between the slam dancing and windmills, the people became one mass of seething chaos.
Local death-core five-piece From These Wounds showed the Over Cranked audience how they have perfected their sound into a brutal shock wave. With only two years worth of live performance underneath their belt, the boys are quickly cutting a bloody path to glory with their take no prisoner's attitude to audio battery. This live performance was just one more step along that path and an introduction into a wider market.
The North Coast mosh-core outfit Wish for Wings pounded the Brisbane audience with their always impressive audio assault. The once settled dirt was turned into a dust bowl as the crowd gave birth to a circle pit that had fists flying and the bodies battering in time to their bone crunching breakdowns.
Performing tracks off their most recent release "The Art of War" Behind Crimson Eyes shook the grounds of the RNA with their well blended use of distorted harmony and pop hooked melodies.
Meanwhile, I Killed the Prom Queen laid the scene to waste once again. With the introduction of new vocalist Ed Butcher to the line up, the Adelaide boys showed both their in depth understanding of the art of shredding and the ham fisted slam of hardcore. A high energy performance from I Killed the Prom Queen that won't be easily forgotten.
Never failing to shock, Blood Duster, Australia's most successful bogan grind-core group, performed their set with the usually "fuck you all with an ice pick" attitude that has made them famous. With the bass player removing his clothes to perform naked whilst lead vocalist Tony announced the checklist of what "being a fag" is. Blood Duster once again became the voice for drunken stupidity and the misogynistic masses everywhere.
Finishing off the day were the headliners and long awaited American progressive hard rock outfit, Clutch. Carting themselves from across the Pacific Ocean for their first tour of Australia, the group thundered through their set without a hitch. From the laid back stoner grooves to old school sludge riffs Clutch played an impressive set list that saw them touch upon old time classics and more recent works. Truly an inspirational performance from the metal veterans.
