The Dwarf in Conversation With: Drunk Mums

At a Drunk Mum’s gig Adam’s mullet will stab you right in the eye, wayfaring sex-dolls might graze the ear and you’ll watch the VB elbowed clear out of your hand. But you don’t care. You can’t really see anymore or know what’s going on really; everyone’s blood-alcohol level is cranked up as high as the amps.

But despite being frequently referred to as just another band that “gives no fucks”, the music of Drunk Mums transcends this stereotype. Hightailing off their venerated EP ‘Eventual Ghost’ and a debut self-titled album, these self-professed “rock n’ roll yobos” prove there’s still backyard talent churning hot and steamy in the guts of Australia.

Their currently trailing a spoor of tinnies, ciggies and dying livers across OZ on their first national tour, igniting fever in Aussie breasts for their second album due later this year. “This next one’s a bit easier to listen to,” Adam tells me, DM’s vocalist/bassist, “like it’s definitely not laid back, but you can expect some great Dad Rock in there.
“And this time we’re getting it all recorded professionally”.

This may be because they’re now managed by Cherry Bar co-owner James Young, who once said he’d never babysit a band full of “precocious cunts” again – but then he went to a Drunk Mums gig.

“He just decided he’d get up on stage with us” says Adam, “and he kept shouting ‘I book thousands of bands a year! But this is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen!’ and we were just like ‘Come on man, as if’”.

The rampant shows of these roughed up kids have become loved by Melburnians ever since they trekked down here from their hometowns in Queensland. Since then they may have garnered a reputation as a bunch of bad arses, but as the neon-mulleted Adam tells me “we’re just being ourselves, we just bring the party”.

iTunes even denied featuring them on their homepage because their debut album cover had the “haggard, aged titties” of a stripper named Peaches.

You can imagine their response when asked to provide an alternative cover.

You’ve hand-picked every one of your supporting acts for this tour, which include lesser-known artists like Rick Moranis Overdrive and the Kremlins. How did you come to know some of these guys, and why do they deserve more attention?
Well we played with The Kremlins for our last single launch, which was the ‘Rubbing Your Gums’ single launch. And we’ve just always loved them, they have such a mental stage presence. Andre, the singer, is just a maniac - but you would never pick it just talking to him.

Drunk Mums are often described as raucous and ‘not giving a fuck’ about anything, but you guys obviously do about your music – how do you feel about being labelled in this way?
Well exactly, it’s not like we don’t care about our music, people just take us at face value - we’re just being ourselves. But I know what you mean, some artists can be one way when you talk to them, but then in the studio or on stage they can turn into a different person. Some people go out and force it, trying to please the masses, and that’s something I really don’t want to do. You should always just be yourself, you know, it’s easier.

You guys are embarking on your first nation-wide ‘Plastic’ tour, is there any venue you’re most excited about playing?
Well we might have already played it – The Tote in Collingwood was just so good. Melbourne’s our home-town you know, so we had a lot of people there. But I’m also really excited about Sydney, mainly because we’ve got 5 shows instead of just doing the one. We’re trying to clock that city.

Well one of your shows is going to be at the last Cherry Rock festival, held at your manager’s Cherry Bar on AC/DC Lane. Are you sad to see the festival end?
Definitely. It’s shit to see it go. But there will be more and more things happening for Melbourne bands, especially now that James bought Yah-Yahs. So hopefully we’ll all be moving onto to better things soon.

You’ve said before that your home recordings give it a ‘live’ feel, but do you prefer the more professional sound?
Yeah I definitely like it more. Because what would happen is that Dean would always be in the control room, having to run in and out to record while also playing guitar, so it would just get too intense sometimes.

Drunk Mums have three songwriters in the mix, does this make it difficult to agree on how the band should sound?
It’s always pretty natural in the studio, but when it comes to playing live we can differ. Like Dean’s songs are pretty laid back, so Jake never wants to play them at a gig because he thinks people won’t get excited. But I’m happy with all of it honestly, no matter which songs we play.

You personally play in other punk rocks bands as well. Have you influenced the Drunk Mums?
I think I’ve definitely brought a punk element to the band, because before Drunk Mums were more a blues-rock band so yeah, I think I’ve made it a bit punk.

Now I’ve gone and stalked you a bit, and found out it was recently your birthday. How did the Drunk Mums celebrate it?
Ha! Well we had a barbeque, got super pissed and ended up at Cherry Bar. It was great.

Melbourne-based artist Ben Jones filmed the video clip for the ‘Plastic’ single, was it his idea for you to just play out in the bush, pretty ocker, literally wrapped in plastic?
It was kind of a group decision, we talked for a while about the location. The bush where we played was out in this great abandoned student village out near High Point. We found out that it used to be a detention centre too, so it was a great. Weird place for a music video we thought.

In one interview you guys say you hope to head to America, is this the next step for Drunk Mums?
Well we’ve barely played all over Australia, so I want to do that first. But I’m keen to go overseas eventually, I’d love going anywhere really though. Like I really want to go Spain actually. They’re really supportive of Australian music. It’s massive over there. Crazy. Whereas in America it’s easier for bands to just get lost in the sea of music.
