5 Things You May Not Have Known About Jack White

The Short List: 5 Things You May Not Have Known About Jack White

Jack White's influence within the contemporary music sphere seems only to be growing. Rolling Stone have caught up with him - their next issue reportedly features a no-holds-barred account of his rise and subsequent rise - and we've managed to disseminate some fact from the circulating myth-stream.
Here are five things you may not have ever known about the old-age-new-age maestro:

5. He doesn't speak to Meg that often

Consequence of Sound have reported, as per Jack's conversation with Rolling Stone, that the former band-mates rarely correspond. “I don’t think anyone talks to Meg,” he told Rolling Stone. “She’s always been a hermit. When we lived in Detroit, I’d have to drive over to her house if I wanted to talk to her, so now it’s almost never.” CoS have also relayed Meg never shared in Jack's celebration of their mutual success as a band. “She’s one of those people who won’t high five me when I get the touchdown. She viewed me that way of ‘Oh, big deal, you did it, so what?’"

4. He doesn't like mobile phones

We can't claim to ever really know what Jack likes and doesn't like, but his expressed dislike for mobile phones at rock shows probably comes as no surprise.
“People can’t clap anymore, because they’ve got a fucking texting thing in their fucking hand, and probably a drink, too!” he told Rolling Stone. “Some musicians don’t care about this stuff, but I let the crowd tell me what to do. There’s no set list. I’m not just saying the same things I said in Cleveland last night. If they can’t give me that energy back? Maybe I’m wasting my time.”

3. He's weirdly generous with his money

Remember the following? Jack White produced a single from his forthcoming LP in record time for Record Store Day:

Skip to the end of the video, to about 10:48. Watch as Jack approaches his makeshift sales counter, sells the first few copies of his single, and proceeds to give the cash he just made to a kid standing next in line. The kid is clearly nonplussed and we don't blame him. Jack then walks off like it weren't no thang; almost as if it were scripted.

2. Jack likes 'Yeezus'

So there, Kanye haters. On West's most recent Yeezus arena tour, Jack told Rolling Stone the rapper's performance “might have been the greatest [he had] seen”.

1. He thinks his best work may be behind him

On The White Stripes: “I would often look at her onstage and say, ‘I can’t believe she’s up there.’ I don’t think she understood how important she was to the band, and to me and to music. She was the antithesis of a modern drummer. So childlike and incredible and inspiring. All the not-talking didn’t matter, because onstage? Nothing I do will top that.”
