Surviving the Gorilla Manor with Local Natives




After generating some major hype at South By Southwest Festival the debut album from Los Angeles' Local Natives was one of the most anticipated in the early part of 2010.

  

The Dwarf checked in with Talyor Rice to see how they are dealing with it all.

  

Thanks for your time guys. Now SXSW was when our ears first pricked up to the sounds of Local Natives. Tell us a bit about how that experience was for you guys in terms of exposure.

  

We received a lot of international attention from SXSW. We had booked nine shows, not knowing what to expect and hoping we could get some kind of exposure. More and more people kept turning up to each show, and by the last one it was truly surreal to realizeā€¦all these people are here to see us?

  

You guys used to be called Cavil At Rest, when did the name change come about and what did it signify?

  

We changed our name to Local Natives midway through the recording of Gorilla Manor. Ryan, Kelcey, and I had been playing under the name Cavil At Rest since high school, so when we heard back our album tracks for the first time, we realized we had really coalesced as a band. It was important for us to have a fresh start.

  

I heard you guys all live together in LA, and was that the inspiration for the album title Gorilla Manor? Haha.

  

Almost correct. We Originally lived together in a house in Orange, forty minutes south of LA. That's where we wrote the album and originally nicknamed the house Gorilla Manor. We moved into a house in LA after that though.

  

What are the pros and cons of sharing a place together?

  

Living together is incredibly beneficial during the creative process. We were writing music together constantly, and you never know when inspiration strikes. It might be during breakfast, or late at night, and whenever it did we could grab some of the guys who were just in the next room to collaborate. Also we are truly best friends, so we love being together.

  

What advice could you give to people wanting to take their music to the next level? It seems you guys really stepped it up when creating this album.

  

Ignore the "industry" during the creative process. We completely holed up for the making of this album, and wrote music together all day every day for quite some time. It was important to be true to ourselves and make music we really loved ourselves. After that, don't expect anyone to do anything for you. We're lucky enough now to be working with some great booking agents, independent labels etc, but we're a very hardworking band and did everything on our own for a long time.

  

How was the NME radar tour for you guys? Any interesting stories?

  

The radar tour was amazing. I think we were surprised at how incredibly receptive the audiences have been for us. We're doing our own European tour and it's incredible that we've now sold out Heaven in London. We never would have expected that if asked back then. One of my favorite stories was the show in Glasgow when the fire alarm went off during the second song. Everyone had to evacuate (including us). Then we came back on to finish the set twenty minutes later and pick up the song from where we left off. It was the weirdest show interruption ever, but the crowd was super hyped up.

  

Can Australian audiences expect a tour in the next year? We'd love to see you down here!

  

We're actually trying to work that out right now. The summer has already started to get very busy with festivals, and we are trying to get to Australia before the end of summer. I hope we make it out, everyone has been telling us how amazing Australia is and I've always wanted to travel there.
