Citizen Kay - The Yes! EP

Australian hip-hop has been on a constant rise for the past decade or so now and just seems to be going from strength to strength. Acts like Bliss N Eso, Hilltop Hoods, Drapht and 360 are topping the charts and headlining festivals across the country, making it one of the hottest homegrown genres around.

And as with any emergence of a popular genre, there comes a new breed of artists joining the craft and Canberra MC Citizen Kay is on top of the new wave of Aussie hip-hop.

The Yes! EP is Kay’s first release and is a really impressive one at that. Each of the four tracks that make up the EP are worthy singles in their own right. Title track ‘Yes!’ leads the way with more brass hooks than a fisherman’s tackle box. ‘Yes!’ is one of the most fun and engaging hip hop tracks of the year and see’s Kay optimistically foreshadow his career “The king is here, cooler than ever… a couple plays on triple J and getting paid for it.”

There are two distinct elements that standout within Citizen Kay’s music, the highly suitable choice of samples and the variety of rhythm and flow used as Kay raps. ‘Yes!’ is jam packed with powerful brass samples while ‘Give Thanks’ bases itself of simple piano patterns and processed beats, providing much needed variety between the tracks.

It’s a shame these songs weren’t released later in Kay’s career as part of an album, because they have the potential to be part of a record of the year, rather than just an establishing EP from a new artist. That being said, if The Yes! EP is where Citizen Kay is beginning, then the path certainly looks bright for this young MC.
